Studio Halden

Portraits and editorial pictures, made slowly in natural light. For people, makers and the magazines that write about them.

02Featured story

A morning at the flower bench.

A loose bouquet of peonies, roses and delphinium in a speckled green vase against a sage wall No flash, no set. Just the bench, the bunch and the light moving across the wall.

We spent one spring morning beside a florist as she built a single arrangement, stem by stem. The brief was simple: photograph it the way it feels to stand next to it.

So we kept to one window, let the light move across the wall, and waited for the moment the bunch stopped looking arranged and started looking found.

03Services and process

What we make, and how it goes.

Four kinds of work, one way of doing it. Every shoot starts with a conversation and ends with a small, careful edit.

  1. 01

    Talk

A short call about what the pictures are for and who will see them.

  2. 02

    Plan

A one page plan: place, light, timing, references. Nothing more.

  3. 03

    Shoot

Small crew, quiet set. We work at the speed of the subject.

  4. 04

    Edit and deliver

A tight edit, graded by hand, delivered in a private gallery.

04About the studio

Small on purpose.

Studio Halden is a small practice for portraits, editorial and still life. We like window light, patient sittings and pictures that still feel true years from now.

Most shoots are one photographer and one assistant. That keeps the room calm, and calm is where the good frames are.

Light
Daylight first. A single soft lamp when the weather says no.
Pace
Time built in for the moment after the posed one.
Delivery
A considered edit, never a dump of every frame.
